Theater Music

All my life I have been surrounded by theater. When music started to play a relevant role in my life, the step towards creating theater music was small. Starting under the guidance of professional musicians, I slowly grew to the point where I could create freely. For me, the role of musician is no different from that of an actor. As a musician you are part of the dialogue with your music and you tell the story together with the rest of the cast.

The feeling of being in a theater is almost like that of a drug - being oblivious to the outside world, completely immersed in the play for a while. Addictive.

De Kattenkeet van Kato

This performance was a new experience for me within the series of plays I did at De Vrijstaat. For the first time I studied and got to know a new genre for a performance. This led to a nice surprise. I immersed myself in the Hip-Hop genre for half a year and fell in love with this genre over that period. This was the first time I'd approached a new genre in such an analytical way with the intent of making it myself. This linked my previously emerging interest in electronic music to more band-oriented music through sampling.

Shortly after the shows, we released the music that I wrote together with Daniel van Boom for this theater piece in an album called "De Kattenkeet van Kato OST". It was an interesting process, editing the music we had written into a "stand alone" product - writing extra parts, determining length for soundscapes, etc.

"De KattenKeet van Kato is set in a shelter for stray cats, in which the kitchen cook Kato holds sway. With this new performance we make the theme of poverty a topic of discussion for children. By sharing stories and experiences, we can contribute to a society where sharing and taking care of each other is important."

White Rabbit

White Rabbit was the show where I felt I made the switch from actor to musician. In the years before that I played in many performances at Theater Young Ones as an actor. At White Rabbit, I took the leap, and committed to being a musician. Under the guidance of Sebastiaan Flier I helped make the music for this performance. It was the gateway that led to me learning to compose for theatre.

"The music theater performance White Rabbit rages like a turbulent road movie through various spaces in and outside the theatre. A 'coming of age' story about crisis and making peace with yourself."
